Say you’re browsing the web and you come across a website that uses an interesting color scheme. With Martin Stoeckli's free color picker tool ColorBug, you can find out what colors that website uses and you can find matching colors. You can do this quite easily – just by dragging and dropping a camera from ColorBug onto anything or anywhere you want.

ColorBug provides support for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 operating systems. A simple setup wizard will help you quickly get the application up and running on a Windows-powered PC. If you installed an application before, you wouldn’t have any problems installing this one. It must be mentioned here that ColorBug is also available as a portable version.

The snapshot ColorBug takes is displayed in the bottom right hand side of the interface. HSL (Hue, Saturation, Luminance) and RGB (Red, Green, Blue) info is presented in the bottom left hand side. The color you picked is presented in the Sample Area in the upper right hand corner.

Using ColorBug is a very simple matter: take the camera and drag it anywhere you want; a snapshot of what is under the camera will be taken and you will be able to select the color you want from the snapshot. When you select a color, it will be presented in the aforementioned Sample Area on the application’s interface. Information on the color you picked can be easily accessed and, if you want to, you can save the color by dragging and dropping it onto the user palette or by pressing an F key.

ColorBug can prove to be a very useful tool to web designers and anyone else who works with graphics.

Pros

ColorBug works with any Windows edition with .NET Framework 2.0 or newer. There’s a portable version as well. Getting accustomed to the interface and accessing the functionality ColorBug has to offer is a straightforward matter. Multiple color formats are supported. ColorBug is free.

Cons

None that I could think of.
